Our King of Nuts– Ode to the Almond & Almond Oil
While there is a “healthy” debate on whether it’s the walnut or the almond, we salute the almond as our “King of Nuts.” Historical sources suggest this King has been around since about 4000 B.C. Originally grown in the Middle East, California is the present-day largest producer of almonds in the world, doubling its production over the past 20 years!
There are so many beautiful attributes to our sweet King of Nuts, and I’m excited to share some of the highlights of its uses and benefits, particularly almond oil, which is why we choose the almond as our “King of Nuts.”
This sweet nut, as well as the almond oil it yields, are both known to enhance and strengthen cognitive functions…which makes sense, as the name “almond” is believed to have the same etymology as the word “amygdala” – the part of the brain that controls the ability to make decisions, develop memories, and process emotions.
Bitter vs. Sweet Almond Oil
From the almond come two variants of almond oil: Bitter and Sweet. Interestingly, the wild bitter almond, when crushed, chewed, or processed, turns into the poisonous chemical commonly known as cyanide…clearly a taboo to avoid! However, bitter almond oil is considered to be an essential oil that retains medicinal properties and benefits, making it safe for external applications. The sweet variety is most commonly used as a carrier oil in skin and hair care products to enhance the appearance, health, and texture of both.
Almond Oil Benefits & Uses
Almond oil is full of vitamin E, and it’s a great source of magnesium, phosphorus, and copper. It’s also an anti-inflammatory, boosts immunity, and is rich in antioxidants known for their free radical fighting abilities. Topically, its concentration in vitamin D and vitamin E (tocopherol) can help heal sun damage, reduce the signs of aging, and fade scars.
Almond oil is used to soothe the skin, treating conditions like eczema and psoriasis, as well as minor wounds and cuts, and can improve complexion and skin tone. Because it is antibacterial and full of vitamin A, almond oil can also be used to treat acne. The beautiful thing about almond oil (in addition to all of these benefits), it absorbs quickly and is a powerful moisturizer – both for the body and face!
