Everything (and more) You’ve Wanted to Know About Cocoa Butter!

What is Cocoa Butter?

Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter, commonly known as Cocoa Butter, is a pale-yellow, edible fat extracted from the cocoa bean. Cocoa beans thrive in hot, humid climates and are grown in tropical regions around the equator, with most of the world’s supply coming from West African countries. Cocoa Butter is extremely versatile and the uses are abundant, ranging from culinary (i.e., chocolate -yum!) to medicinal to cosmetic.

Cocoa has been used in medicine for around 3,000 years, dating back to the ancient Aztecs and Mayans (who also used it for currency). With the constant evolution of modern-day medicine, it has been discovered that Cocoa Butter contains compounds called phytochemicals (naturally occurring plant chemicals) which are also very beneficial to skin and body care. Used medicinally on skin, it works as an anti-inflammatory moisturizer that offers relief to skin afflicted with swelling, irritation, and redness. It is believed to enhance the body’s immunity by promoting relaxation, and it is gentle enough for use on burns and infections without causing further sensitivities.

Benefits of Cocoa Butter for Skin

When used topically, Cocoa Butter melts at body temperature and works to naturally soothe dry, sensitive skin while reducing and preventing the appearance of scars and unwanted marks. Its richness in vitamins and anti-oxidants makes it ideal for use as a moisturizer that promotes skin health and relieves the itching, chapping, peeling or burning discomfort associated with conditions such as eczema and dermatitis.

The high levels of fatty acids, oleic, palmitic, and stearic acids found in Cocoa Butter deeply hydrate and nourish the skin. The saturated fats create a protective barrier between skin and the harsh, weathering environmental elements, allowing the skin to retain its required moisture and restoring its health, by remaining on the skin for hours despite being easily absorbed.

The rich antioxidants found in Cocoa Butter destroy free radicals and protect the skin from signs of aging and environmental damage. Protecting your skin from free-radical damage is crucial to keep it healthy and youthful-looking – which aren’t we always looking for that?? It is also an anti-inflammatory – which is just another way to help your skin withstand the passage of time!!
