Teens, Tweens, and Toxic Skincare Routines

Exposing the Hidden Dangers & Long-Term Risks of the Youth Obsession

Spoiler Alert:  Teenage Skin Doesn't Need a $300 Face Cream

So, your bathroom counter looks like a Sephora exploded, and you're wondering if your tween's allowance is being spent on anti-aging serums with price tags that could fund a small nation's GDP. Welcome to the world of teenage skincare in 2024, where wrinkle-free 15-year-olds are dabbing on retinoids and ceramides as if they're prepping for a reunion... with their kindergarten class.

As a skincare formulator and mom of a 15-year-old skincare “enthusiast,” I witness firsthand the challenges of navigating the obsession with skincare among tweens and teenagers, and I'm here to tell you: it has gotten out of hand! To elicit an eyeroll from my daughter… “When I was a teenager,” my biggest skin concern was whether my Lip Smackers matched my mood ring. Now? Kids are slathering on serums that cost more than my first car.

The Current State of Skincare Obsession

Walk into any middle or high school today, and you'll find lockers stuffed with more skincare products than textbooks. Thanks to social media influencers and the abundance of misinformation, tweens and teens are convinced they need a 27-step routine to achieve "glass skin" or risk looking like a wrinkled prune by age 20.

But here's the truth bomb: Teenage skin doesn't need a $300 face cream. While taking care of one's skin is undoubtedly important, this growing obsession raises concerns about the use of products intended for adults on young, developing skin and the potential long-term effects.

The Truth About Teenage Skin

Let’s start with the basics: Your skin is amazing. It’s your body’s largest organ, and it’s constantly renewing itself.  For tweens and teens, your skin is still producing collagen at warp speed, cell turnover is faster than a TikTok trend, and wrinkles are as foreign to you as dial-up internet.

While it might come as a surprise to most tweens and younger teens, you don't need anything beyond the basics. Your skin is plump, hydrated, and full of collagen and elastin, the stuff that makes it firm and bouncy. Your skin’s natural oil production is in overdrive during these years, and your barrier function is still pretty robust. This means your skin is doing a great job of protecting itself, keeping moisture in, and warding off environmental nasties.

The Rise of Skincare Among Tweens and Teens

The allure of perfect skin is nothing new, but the intensity and reach of this trend are unprecedented. Our tweens and teens are bombarded with images and videos of flawless complexions, often accompanied by recommendations for various skincare products. This has led to a significant increase in the number of tweens (children aged 9-12) and teenagers incorporating sophisticated skincare routines into their daily lives. The desire to emulate their favorite influencers and achieve perfect skin has resulted in a booming market for skincare products targeted at this demographic.  As a skincare formulator, I find myself in a unique position – armed with knowledge but often met with the classic teenage eyeroll and body language that says: "You don't know anything!"

Why Adult Skincare is a No-Go for Teen Skin

Here’s where things get tricky. The skincare industry is full of products designed for, well, adults. This means they’re packed with potent active ingredients aimed at combating the signs of aging: think fine lines and wrinkles, loss of elasticity, and hyperpigmentation. For teenagers, these ingredients can be about as useful as an algebra textbook at a beach party—and they can actually cause more harm than good.

  • Over-Exfoliation – think power washer to clean a delicate flower: Many adult products contain potent exfoliants like alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs). While these are great for sloughing off dead skin cells in mature skin, they can be way too harsh for teenage skin, leading to irritation, sensitivity, and even breakouts. Too much exfoliation can strip the skin of its natural oils, making your sebaceous glands go into overdrive to compensate. Hello, oil slick!
  • Retinoids: Retinoids are the gold standard in anti-aging, but they’re not for everyone—especially not for teens. These powerful ingredients can cause dryness, peeling, and redness, which teens’ already-hormonal skin doesn’t need. In some cases, they can even make your skin more sensitive to the sun, increasing your risk of sun damage.
  • Heavy Moisturizers: Adult skin often needs richer, more emollient moisturizers to combat dryness and loss of elasticity. Teen skin, on the other hand, is usually oily and doesn’t need heavy creams that can clog pores and lead to breakouts. Using these products can actually exacerbate acne and leave the skin feeling greasy.

The Real Risks of Playing Skincare Roulette

Using products meant for mature skin can backfire, leaving your skin irritated, broken out, and confused. You might find yourself in a cycle of over-treating and trying to fix the damage with—you guessed it—more products. The improper use of adult skincare products on young skin doesn't just cause immediate issues but can also have long-term effects:

  • Premature Aging:  Ironically, using anti-aging products too early can accelerate aging by thinning the skin and making it more susceptible to environmental damage. Over-exfoliation, sun sensitivity, and dehydration from inappropriate products can make your skin age faster in the long run. This includes the early appearance of fine lines and wrinkles as the skin's ability to retain moisture and repair itself is compromised. It's like trying to be a grown-up actually makes you less grown-up. The universe has a weird sense of humor.
  • Persistent Sensitivity:  Continual irritation and overuse of strong ingredients can lead to chronic skin sensitivity. This can result in a lifelong struggle with redness, dryness, and susceptibility to environmental factors.
  • Imbalanced Skin:  The disruption of the skin's natural oil production and pH balance can result in long-term issues such as persistent acne or dryness. Once the skin's natural balance is disturbed, it can take years to restore it, leading to ongoing skin problems.
  • Hyperpigmentation and Scarring:  Improper treatment of acne with strong products can cause post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and scarring, which can be challenging to treat and may affect self-esteem and confidence in the long run.

Teens and Tweens: What Your Skin Actually Needs

Here’s the good news: Reclaim a few extra minutes of sleep…your skin doesn’t need a 12-step routine! In fact, less is more. Stick to the basics:

  • Gentle Cleanser: Use a mild, pH-balanced cleanser to remove dirt, oil, and makeup without stripping your skin or making your skin feel tight or dry.
  • Moisturizer: Keep your skin happy and hydrated. Choose a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizer that hydrates without clogging pores.
  • Sunscreen: This is non-negotiable…it’s like a force field for your face. Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every single day. Trust me, this is the best anti-aging product you’ll ever use!
  • Spot Treatment: For breakouts, a spot treatment with benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid can help without drying out your entire face. And, HANDS OFF!! Find the will power to not touch or pick at your face!

Parents: Stay Cool, Stay Involved, Save Your Wallet!

Parents play a crucial role in guiding our tweens and teens through this skincare maze. Allowing them to use adult skincare products without understanding the potential risks can contribute to long-term skin issues. But, as a skincare enthusiast and mom, I get it. You’re probably trying to figure out how to tell your beautiful child that slathering on an expensive anti-aging serum is not the key to eternal youth, all-the-while avoiding the infamous eyeroll. It’s tough when your teenager doesn’t think you know anything, even though you could probably formulate a better moisturizer in your sleep.

By approaching the situation with patience, understanding, and a bit of creativity, we can help our teens navigate this skincare craze while fostering a healthy relationship with their skin and, more importantly, with themselves. Remember, the goal isn't perfect skin – it's helping our teens develop a positive self-image and the critical thinking skills they'll need throughout their lives.

The key is to be subtle. Make skincare a bonding activity, not a lecture – share interesting articles or videos from reputable sources…or watch skincare myth-busting videos together. I even came up with my own TikTok challenge for my daughter: anything she sees on TikTok (or any SM platform) that piques her interest, stop right then and do an online search for that topic; find 3 credible sources on the topic and then educate me on what she finds! Ok, I found my approach with this much more amusing than she did, but hey, it was worth a shot!  Since that approach was an epic fail, we now play: The Ingredient Game. I challenge her to research one ingredient in a product she’s interested in – for her to understand what it is and what it does. Whoever comes up with the most interesting fact wins!  This is a win-win for me because she’s becoming an informed, educated consumer, and I’m learning a few new facts about ingredients!

Regardless of your approach, remember to make it fun and engaging – the goal is to educate without them realizing they’re being educated.  And, lastly…set a budget!!  If your tween or teen insists on buying products, give them a reasonable skincare allowance. It teaches financial responsibility and limits potential skin damage (plus saves your wallet!)!

Final Thoughts

The skincare obsession among youth is a double-edged sword. While it promotes the importance of self-care and skin health, it also brings the risk of misuse and overuse of products not suited for young skin. Educating tweens and teens about the differences in skincare needs and encouraging age-appropriate routines can help them achieve healthy, glowing skin without the adverse effects of adult skincare products.

To all the tweens and teens out there: Your skin is not a problem to be fixed. It's an amazing organ that's doing its best to protect you. Treat it with respect and kindness, not a chemistry experiment. Save the retinol for your quarter-life crisis and, for now, stick to sunscreen, gentle cleansing, and moisturizing. Remember, the people you admire most probably aren't thinking about their pore size – they're out there living life, having fun, and making memories. That's what really gives you that glow everyone's after. So, step away from the mirror, turn off the social media influencers, put down that 10-step routine, and go have an adventure! Your skin (and your future self) will thank you.

To the parents:  Stay strong. By guiding our “little adults” toward suitable skincare practices and leading by example, we can help ensure their skin remains healthy now and in the future.  As with all aspects of health and wellness, balance and knowledge are key! And, yes, one day they will thank you for not letting them pickle their faces in retinol at 13. In the meantime, keep fighting the good fight against the 10-step skincare routine epidemic…and maybe hide your credit card, just in case!

Until next time, cheers and be well!
